Course Description

The Literature in English course aims to develop learners' knowledge, understanding, and skills in in-depth subject content, independent thinking, and the application of knowledge to various situations. It focuses on developing critical thinking abilities, logical reasoning, effective communication, and the ability to analyse and evaluate different types of texts.

Course Objectives

  • Foster an appreciation for literature and encourage an informed personal response to a diverse range of texts from different periods and cultures.
  • Enhance written communication skills by effectively and accurately expressing ideas and interpretations in written form.
  • Develop interdependent skills of reading, analysis, and communication to understand and interpret literary works.
  • Analyse and evaluate the techniques used by writers to create meaning and effects in their works.

Course Outline

Students will study texts in the forms of prose, poetry, and drama from various periods and cultures. Close reading, analysis, and interpretation of texts will be emphasised. The course encourages students to engage in wider reading to deepen their understanding of the studied texts. Students will explore the conventions of different genres and examine the historical and cultural contexts in which the works were written, read, and received. A focus on evaluating opinions and ideas, both personal and from others, will be developed at the A Level stage.
