Course Description

The Latin course aims to develop learners' understanding of Latin and its influence on modern European languages. Through comparing Latin's structure with other languages, learners also develop an analytical approach to language learning. They study Latin prose and verse literature in its social and historical context, and are encouraged to develop a personal response to what they read. This will develop an awareness of a different time and culture, and an appreciation of Rome's legacy to the modern world.

Course Objectives

This course's aim is to enable learners to develop:

• An understanding of the Latin language
• The ability to read, understand, appreciate, and respond to some Latin literature
• An understanding of some of the elements of Roman civilization
• An analytical approach to language by seeing English in relation to a language of very different structure and by observing the influence of Latin on English
• An awareness of the motives and attitudes of people of a different time and culture, while considering the legacy of Rome to the modern world
• A greater understanding of a range of aesthetic, ethical, linguistic, political, religious, and social issues
• An excellent foundation of knowledge for advanced study.

Course Outline

This course provides balanced focus on both the study of the Latin language and the exploration of Latin prose and verse literature within their social and historical contexts. Students will engage in comprehensive learning experiences that encompass language acquisition as well as the analysis and appreciation of various literary works, allowing for a holistic understanding of Latin and its cultural significance.
